More often than not, people say to me: “well Laura, it’s easy for you to be in good shape probably because you have never been over weight, or you don’t have kids or you have always been an athlete..” 😂😂😂 then I laugh because the truth is, all of the opposite!
❌I never played sports growing up
❌I have struggled with weight most of my life
❌I gave birth via C-section once
The only way that I have managed to stay in descent shape is the fact that i never accepted the opposite as an option. I have never settled and I never will.
I had found a “happy place” doing cardio when I was 16. By age 17 I moved to the US. As soon as I moved, within months, I had gained close to 30 lbs as a new immigrant, clueless who ate fast food.
In my 20s I discovered strength training which helped my foundation. I put myself through college and a full time job trying to make ends meet, my weight was up and down, unhappy and tired. I did graduate, overweight lol
2005 Met my hubby and I lost weight following weight watchers.
Gained it all back because I was only cutting calories at that point and not exercising (I had lost muscle again bc I stopped lifting for a few years)
In 2007 fell in love with lifting again and did my first competition where I got last place but I was in my best shape ever.
That same year I got pregnant and gained 50 lbs. My pregnancy had complications so I didn’t get to exercise at all… in fact, I enjoyed eating lol.
Once I gave birth, and after healing from c-section, I had tunnel vision. I went back to prioritizing protein, eating Whole Foods, weight training and 20 minutes of cardio. 4 months later I was back to my pre pregnancy weight! Lost the 50 lbs through consistent effort.
I battled eating disorders all through my 30’s as I competed every year up until age 42, not to mention I was diagnosed with HYPOTHYROIDISM at age 34.
I managed with medication and kept pushing. Finally in 2018, after taking 1st place at my last competition in Costa Rica, , I decided to stop competing and find a way to remain at a healthy weight while feeling athletic and in good shape.
Ever since, I have not looked back. It’s been 4 years where I haven’t felt better.
